Highway™ 1.1 Documentation (Main Window)

Highway's main screen is pretty self-explanatory (see Figure 1 below). Like all web browsers, it contains an address bar, Back and Forward buttons, and several other buttons on the Top Toolbar, including Go, Refresh, Stop, Home, and Help.

Beneath the Top Toolbar is a Menu Bar containing items such as File, Edit, Tools, and Help, each of which contain appropriate sub-menus.

Beneath the menu bar is the Bottom Toolbar. The Bottom Toolbar contains the following buttons: Favorites, Web Search, Facebook (much more on that later), Copy, Print, and Options. In addition, at the far right end of the Bottom Toolbar there are two more buttons which will appear on occasion depending on the web page you are looking at and the options you have set from the Options window.  The first is a secure lock icon which appears automatically when visiting a secure web site. If you do not see this icon, then the web page you are currently looking at is not secure. In other words, don't enter any private information into such a page.  The second is a Notification button that will appear if you have any unread items in your Facebook Live Newsfeed, but only if you have chosen that option in the Options window.

Each toolbar button contains an image and/or some text that explain its functionality. Mousing over a button will also cause a tooltip to be displayed if further explanation is needed.

A screenshot of the main screen appears below. An explanation of the functionality of some of the less obvious buttons and menu items follows.

Figure 1

Favorites Favorites: The Favorites button works just like the Favorites or Bookmarks button on any browser. Clicking on it will cause a sub-menu to appear. The first two sub-menu items are Add A Favorite and Organize Favorites. After those, your favorites will appear in alphabetical order - first folders, then individual favorites. You can import your favorites from another browser as well by clicking Tools, and then Import Favorites from the Menu Bar.
Web Search Web Search: The Web Search button allows you to search the web for words or phrases.
Facebook Facebook: The Facebook button contains a sub-menu with three items:
  • Post A Message To Your Wall: Clicking this sub-menu item will cause a small comments window to be displayed where you can enter a message to be posted to your own wall.  (This is also known as changing your status on Facebook.)  To learn more about this feature, click here.
  • Post A Link To This Page To Your Wall: Clicking this sub-menu item will automatically post a link to the web page you are currently viewing onto your own Facebook wall. You will be given a chance to add comments if you wish. To learn more about this feature, click here.
  • Access Friends: Clicking this sub-menu item will display a second screen containing a list of all of your Facebook friends and their photos, along with a checkbox next to each. You can share with your Facebook friends or go to their profiles from this window. To learn more about this feature, click here.
  • News Feed: Clicking this sub-menu item will cause a second screen to be displayed containing all the items from your "Live Feed" on Facebook.  You can attach Comments to items and/or indicate that you Like an item just like on the Facebook web site.  To learn more about this feature, click here.
  • Launch Facebook Website: Clicking this item will simply cause Facebook's web site to be loaded into your main browser window. It works just like a built-in Favorite.
Options The Options button takes you to the Options screen. It's exactly the same as clicking Tools -> Options from the menu bar. The Options screen contains two tabs, General and Facebook.  The General tab contains settings you can use to customize the way Highway™ behaves.  The Facebook tab contains settings specifically having to do with the way Highway™ interacts with Facebook on your behalf.
Notification The Notification button will appear at the far right of the Bottom Toolbar if you have unread messages in your Live News feed. Clicking the button will bring you to the News Feed window. (Note that this button will only appear if you've chosen the Notify On New Newsfeed Items option in the Options screen.)
Secure The Secure Lock icon will appear at the far right of the Bottom Toolbar any time you visit a web page that is secured by SSL. If you do NOT see the Secure Lock icon, you should not enter any personal information on that page.

As noted above, there are several different windows/features available within the Highway 1.1 application in addition to the main browser window.  To find out about the other features in the application, click on the corresponding links below:
